Being Your Authentic Self in a Rapidly Changing World

The world is changing rapidly. Climate change, Trump, the cost of living and AI are among the forces contributing to a sense of unease across society.

Through 24-hour news and the pocket-sized computers we carry all day, we are more aware than ever of what is happening around the world. Much of what reaches us is designed to provoke fear, anger or outrage - to keep us looking at it.

And we can do almost nothing about most of it.

This can leave us feeling frustrated, powerless and anxious. Simply trying to make sense of everything can become overwhelming.

One way I approach this is to slow down and return to what I can influence: my body, my breathing, my attention and my actions. This reduces my anxiety and restores a sense of calm and personal agency.

I remember the beginning of the Serenity Prayer:

God, grant me the serenityto accept the things I cannot change;courage to change the things I can;and wisdom to know the difference.

— Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971)

I’m not a Christian, but I feel the power of these words.

When we step back from the noise, we create space to hear ourselves again. We can ask: What do I actually believe? What matters to me? What kind of person do I want to be, and what can I do today?

From this calmer state, approaches such as CBT and Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy can help us examine our thinking, make clearer decisions and act according to our own values rather than simply reacting to the world around us.
